8 Responsibilities Of The Bridesmaids

September 12, 2017 / Shuttering Hearts

It is a once in a lifetime honour when your best girlfriend asked you to be one of her bridesmaids. The responsibilities of the bridesmaids may not be as heavy as the maid of honour duty, yet bridesmaids have their own tasks and checklist to be cleared off. Being a bridesmaid may seem like a glorious role, but this girl squad have to complete their bridesmaid's duties checklist prior the wedding day to help ease the burden off the bride’s shoulders.

A good bridesmaid will go all out and help her best girlfriend to plan and prepare her perfect wedding without needing her to worry all the hassle by herself.

So, what are the 8 duties of bridesmaids?

1. Collecting Gifts/"Ang pau"

During the wedding, there will be a countless amount of gifts or "Ang pau" (red packets) for the bride and groom. However, the newlyweds will not be around to collect them one by one.

Therefore, you will have to step in, accept and record it down for them at the wedding reception. Keep the guests' presents and red packets in a safe place until the wedding is over to pass it to the bride and groom.

2. Gate-crashing games preparation

One of the most exciting wedding session during Chinese Wedding that most bridesmaids-to-be look forward to! Meet up with the rest of the bridesmaids and plan the customised gate-crashing games perfectly for the groom and his groomsmen. Always bear in mind not to go overboard with gate-crashing ideas that might actually create hard feelings.

There are plenty of creative yet gentle gate-crashing ideas that you can refer to. The core idea of having a gate-crashing game is for the groom to show how far he will go to get his bride. No one would want a memorable life event to turn sour.

3. Take care of the busy bride

It is almost guaranteed that 70% of the brides will be on diet weeks or even months ago to fit right in her perfect, dreamy wedding dress. We understand that it is the bride's biggest moment before proceeding to the next stage in life. However, one of the responsibilities in being bridesmaids is to make sure that the busy bride has consumed some light food or at least keeping herself hydrated with water.

Wedding itinerary is usually hectic and packed since morning so let's not forget to feed our bride before something gone wrong. Other than that, you can also help the bride out in other different ways, even the simplest of things. It’s good for the bride to keep her mind off things hours before the wedding.

4. Before the grand entrance

There will be a moment where the guests have arrived before the wedding has started. It is almost impossible for the bride and groom to welcome and handle all of the guests. Well, there are a few ways you can offer your help as a bridesmaid. For example, you can lead the guests to their seats or make sure the refreshments are being served.

One key thing to keep in mind is to make sure that all of the guests are enjoying their time during the wedding day. If the wedding reception desk is occupied, you are still able to step in and mingle around with the guests before the grand entrance and starting of the wedding dinner feast.

5. Bachelorette Party

Another important duty as the bridesmaids is to plan and co-host the bachelorette party together with the maid of honour. Make sure everyone especially the bride is having an enjoyable time. The bachelorette party is mainly for the bride to relax and de-stress from all the wedding planning she has to do for the wedding. It is also the last time your best girlfriend get to hang out and enjoy some wild fun with you while being single.

6. Emcee/Performance

In some cases, you might be asked to host the wedding if you’re good in public speaking. It is always better if the emcee of the wedding day knows the newlyweds on a personal level. This can lead the whole wedding event to be more emotional and touching. So if you are good in public speaking and there’s still no emcee assigned, you know what to do (it’s your time to shine!).

Bridesmaids who have been complimented for good vocal or has experience in performing, it is the best opportunity to show your support and love to the bride and groom, as a token of gift to the lovebirds.

Don't worry, groomsmen. We did not forget about you. Check out more roles of the groomsmen in Malaysia here!

7. Touching up makeup

Throughout the wedding hopping from location to location, it is unavoidable that the bride’s make up might smear. Yes, it is the makeup artist job to do the bride's makeup prior the wedding ceremony in the morning. However, some makeup artist will only be responsible to do bridal makeup during wedding preparation.

That's why it is a good idea to bring along the fundamental makeup kit such as foundation base or concealer to ensure the bride looking her best anytime during the wedding day. You never know when you might need it so when the time comes, you’re ready.

8. Help with wedding decorations

Other than fulfilling your duty as bridesmaids during the wedding day, you are still able to help out BEFORE. Besides the important wedding planning in printing and sending out wedding invitation cards, bridal dress and shoe shopping, one of the bridesmaids' responsibilities may involve in helping to put up wedding decorations. Make sure everything is perfectly placed accordingly without flaw.

Lastly, it is advisable to keep some tissues ready by your side. Weddings are the time where things will get emotional for both the bride and groom along with their parents. Having tissues in standby will definitely come in handy!
